Maggiori informazioni sul libro

This monograph is the first in English on a significant Polish painter, Józef Halas (1927-2015), who was active in Wroclaw from 1949 until his death. His unique body of work, largely created during the Cold War, remained largely unrecognized in Western Europe and North America. The Mountain series, central to his 1960s activity, showcases a strong connection with nature while distancing itself from traditional landscape painting. Subsequent series such as Oppositions, Partitions, Verticals, Obliques, Levels, and Interiors represent the peak of his artistic production, embodying a poetics of contradiction in diverse and impactful ways. The Pocket Gouaches, initiated in the late 1970s, further illustrate Halas’s openness to experimentation. In recent years, the art world has expanded its focus, embracing a pluralistic view of modernity and its diverse contributors. Halas is now recognized as a key figure in this broader narrative. This monograph features contributions from Michel Gauthier, curator at the Centre Pompidou, Magdalena Howorus-Czajka, professor at the University of Gdansk, and art critic Marjolaine Lévy, aiming to enhance the understanding of Halas's work beyond Poland and situate it within an international context.
