This popular-science book explores Doggerland, a significant yet lesser-known archaeological site in Europe. The North Sea's beaches conceal a vast prehistoric landscape that reveals nearly a million years of human habitation. Doggerland is where early hominids made their first footprints in northern Europe over 900,000 years ago. For hundreds of thousands of years, it was shaped by ice ages, teeming with woolly mammoths, rhinoceroses, horses, and reindeer, alongside Neanderthals like Krijn, the first known inhabitant of Doggerland. As the last Ice Age ended, modern humans also left their mark, including the notable Leman-and-Ower-Banks spearhead, the first documented find from Doggerland, and some of the region's oldest art. With the Holocene's arrival, inhabitants faced climate change and rising sea levels, mirroring challenges we face today. Mesolithic hunter-gatherers thrived in a rich, yet ever-changing environment, adapting successfully to their circumstances. However, ongoing submergence and a massive tsunami around 6150 BC marked the beginning of the end. Within a few centuries, the last islands vanished, and the story of Doggerland faded into obscurity. This book resurrects this lost world, revealing its significance and history.
