Even in the early days of the pandemic, it was evident that minorities, indigenous peoples, and marginalized communities faced higher risks of Covid-19 infection and death. However, the crisis has had far-reaching effects beyond immediate health outcomes, disrupting employment, education, housing, and mental well-being. This volume presents three thematic chapters and 10 key lessons, supported by global case studies, illustrating how these communities have disproportionately suffered, often exacerbated by poorly implemented or discriminatory government policies. More fundamentally, it emphasizes that the inequity and discrimination highlighted by the pandemic existed long before and are likely to persist without transformative societal change. As countries work towards recovery, it is crucial to aim for more than a return to normalcy. This global emergency presents an opportunity to address systemic racism and injustice that minority and indigenous communities have faced for generations. Without meaningful action to tackle these underlying issues, the world risks facing further health crises in the future.
