A lovely story that takes a child's imagination slowly from their existing modern environment, through a secret path into a magical and credible riverside world to meet the colourful riverside creatures and become part of their world. As the creatures appear one by one and introduce themselves they describe an event they have to attend in a hurry but no one actually says what the event is for. The creatures help each other to make it to the big event where the reason for the event is revealed. Simple repetition is used to engage the child with the narrator and simple facts about our natural world are brought out in learning stations in the margin where the narrator can stop and ponder with the child before proceeding. The story is well illustrated to assist the imagination of the child.
