On a summer night in 415 BCE, unknown individuals mutilated most of the domestic "herms"—guardian statues of Hermes—in Athens. The immediate reaction was one of fear, as Athenians suspected a conspiracy against the city, its fleet, and democracy itself. In response, a board of investigators was established, leading to informants, accusations, and the flight of many accused individuals. Ultimately, dozens faced exile or execution, with their properties confiscated.
