Theodor Fontane's work encompasses five volumes that explore the landscapes and culture of Brandenburg. The first volume, focusing on the County of Ruppin, was created between 1859 and 1861 and first published in 1862, with subsequent revisions leading to the 1892 edition. The second volume, detailing the Oderland, was developed from 1860 to 1863 and published in 1863, also following the 1892 text. The Havelland section, written between 1863 and 1872, saw its first release in 1873, adhering to the same revised edition. The fourth volume, Spreeland, was produced from 1859 to 1881, with its first edition appearing in 1882, again based on the 1892 version. Lastly, the volume on Five Castles was crafted between 1880 and 1888, published in 1889. This new edition, published in 2016, is in a large format and features a two-column layout. It is edited by Karl-Maria Guth, with the text foundation drawn from the comprehensive works of Fontane, edited by notable scholars and published between 1959 and 1975.
