Exploring the tension between Enlightenment thought and premodern philosophical orthodoxy, this work examines the concept of individual autonomy against the backdrop of intrinsic hierarchies. The author argues that Enlightenment thinkers, while promoting self-determination, ultimately fail to provide a solid philosophical foundation for freedom.
