In the early stages of our research on the millinery trade in New York, we recognized the need for extensive fieldwork and authoritative payroll data. Interviews with workers and employers continued through 1911 and 1912, alongside investigations into other trades. By 1914, we gained access to payrolls through the Factory Investigating Commission. Understanding the seasonal nature of the trade was crucial; we realized that for legislative inquiries into worker income, it was essential to analyze earnings over the entire year rather than just weekly wage rates. This approach necessitated an intensive study of a few representative shops instead of a superficial examination of many. The goal was to capture the fluctuations in workforce size and total payroll across different seasons. This research is part of a broader effort to document and preserve the history of labor in this industry, and it highlights the complexities and variances inherent in the millinery trade. The publisher, Forgotten Books, is dedicated to reproducing significant historical works, utilizing advanced technology to maintain the original format while addressing imperfections in the text.
