The savsns, derived from the roots yqi (to sacrifice or worship) and mid (to know), represents the Knowledge of Sacrifice or Sacrificial d104s and Formulas. It is distinct from the Big veda, which focuses on Recited Praise, the Samaveda (Chanted Hymns), and the Atharva (Brahmaveda), centered on Prayer, Charm, and Spells. Although it ranks second among the Vedas and contains ancient elements, its current compilation reflects a later date, showcasing the development of castes, arts, sciences, trades, and occupations. The Samhita, comprising hymns, texts, and formulas, serves as the hymn and prayer book for the Adhvaryu priests, differing from the Hotar, Udgfitar, and Brahman, who are associated with the other Vedas. This collection arose from the increasing complexity of Indian rituals and the inadequacy of the Big veda Hymns to fulfill the needs of diverse rites and ceremonies.
