The US has often obscured the true nature of its relationships with nations that challenge its ambitions, projecting fears of harm from these nations while simultaneously expanding its influence over them. Following the Soviet Union's collapse, America celebrated its perceived uncontested leadership and embraced the belief that it could ensure global peace and prosperity. However, the emergence of China as a formidable competitor at the start of the 21st century has sparked fears of a new threat, encapsulated in the mantra, “The Chinese are coming...!” This work challenges the notion that China poses a genuine threat to the US, suggesting instead that it threatens American superpower status. It debunks the myth of the universality of US values and counters the portrayal of China as merely imperialistic and dictatorial. Through a historical analysis of both nations' ideologies, it reveals the challenges the US faces in adapting to a changing international landscape, rooted in its belief in exceptionalism and benevolence. In contrast, China's ideology has demonstrated remarkable internal coherence and adaptability, incorporating Western values and Confucian principles to create a flexible framework for public policy that responds effectively to both national and global shifts.
