A Map of the Edge is the story of Rick, a precocious fifteen-year-old, coming of age in Southern California in 1969. Deserted by his mother when she flees his abusive father, we follow Rick through family conflicts, juvenile hall, and on into a strange journey along the fringe of Sixties society.Joining forces with Lincoln Ellard-a more experienced boy with messianic aspirations-Rick becomes a player in the offbeat, visionary subculture of the California desert. With the profits from a low-key drug-dealing operation, Rick and Lincoln set out to do their part to forge the new world they believe is on the horizon. But things turn ugly, and Rick is involved in bigger crimes, including a double murder.As their dreams dissolve, Rick sacrifices his freedom to save a friend, and once again descends into the bowels of the juvenile justice system. This time, however, he emerges stronger and perhaps wiser, and finds love-or at least the foundations of love-where he never thought to look.
