Maggiori informazioni sul libro
Mary, a cheerful middle child from Northern California, faces upheaval when her dad leaves. Her mom turns to alcohol and brings home Eddy, a bar stranger, whose daughters, Summer and Misty, move in and take over Mary's life. As Eddy's friends turn their home into a party hub, Mary struggles to find love and comfort in unhealthy ways, navigating life without proper parenting. Despite graduating college against the odds, she battles childhood demons through self-medication, people pleasing, and workaholism, ultimately achieving the American Dream. However, unfamiliar with true happiness, she becomes miserable and starts to dismantle her life, unknowingly repeating her parents' mistakes. A pivotal moment occurs by her pool, on the brink of divorce, as she watches her joyful seven-year-old daughter play. This reflection leads her to confront her discontent, or "somewhere-else-itis," rooted in her past. Determined to change, Mary begins to unravel her flawed thought patterns, overcome addictions, and seek unmedicated joy through new adventures like soap making, dancing, and roller derby. Embracing self-love, she learns to face life's challenges head-on, acknowledging that while "crap sandwiches" will continue to come her way, she can thank her past for the wisdom it has imparted.
