In neurophysiology, the focus has long been on single-unit studies, stemming from foundational sensory, central, and motor research. Recently, however, field potentials and a more comprehensive approach have gained attention due to technical advancements and the validation of previously overlooked findings. To explore this evolving field, a conference was held in West Berlin in August 1985, showcasing diverse methodologies in brain function research. The conference featured a range of approaches, including basic and applied, electric and magnetic, EEG and EP/ERP, as well as various frequency and field types. It included invited lectures, a panel discussion on "How brains may work," and a review of relevant methodologies. The event highlighted how integrating different concepts, methods, and results can reveal new insights in brain research. The proceedings of the conference, updated and revised by the authors, also include contributions from attendees who were invited to write chapters, enriching the discourse on these innovative approaches to understanding brain function.
