È una curiosa storia questa, che adotta i modi di un tipico racconto dell'orrore, e dove la scrittrice neozelandese manifesta una buona capacità di evocare con la scrittura ciò che al cinema viene affidato a ormai sofisticatissimi effetti speciali: lemuri dalle ambigue sembianze umane, possessioni ed esorcismi, orride metamorfosi, e infine un complicatissimo rito di passaggio che prende la forma di viaggio onirico, dentro e fuori di sé. Tuttavia, l'iniziazione alle pratiche magiche avviene grazie agli uffici di un ambiguo e seduttivo ragazzo-strega, cosicché, dissipato l'incubo, l'unico effetto visibile della metamorfosi è un'accresciuta sensualità della ragazza, che non considera più le avventure sentimentali della madre come una minaccia all'integrità degli affetti familiari, né appare più insensibile alle sollecitazioni dell'altro sesso.
