Voltairova kniha, ústící ve vášnivou obhajobu tolerance a svobody vyznání, zaznamenala hned v době svého vydání veliký úspěch a měla celoevropský ohlas. Patří nepochybně mezi ta díla evropského osvícenství, jež měla praktický dopad. Její morální étos není jistě zanedbatelný ani dnes, v době jiných projevů nesnášenlivosti, než jakým čelil Voltaire a jeho současníci, zůstává ovšem rovněž pozoruhodným svědectvím o osobnosti, odvaze, publicistické schopnosti a intelektuálním rozměru svého autora.

Voltaires beundring for det engelske er utilslørt, og boken ble med rette oppfattet som en sviende kritikk av Frankrike. Den er blitt kalt et manifest for opplysningstiden. «Traktat om toleransen» (1763) ble skrevet etter justismordet på Jean Calas, som ble henrettet for å ha drept sin egen sønn fordi han ville konvertere og bli katolikk. Tross sitt dystre utgangspunkt er det en fornøyelig bok, boblende av til dels ganske svart humor. Voltaires drepende ironi lar intoleransen fremtre som absurd og latterlig, men boken er også en inntrengende appell om medlidenhet og hjertelag. Menneskene bør slutte å drepe hverandre for sine gjetningers skyld. Vi må skjønne at ingen har monopol på sannheten. Har «Filosofiske brev» og «Traktat om toleransen» noen misjon i dag? Klarere enn noensinne ser vi at religiøs og politisk skråsikkerhet, vissheten om at egen saks absolutte rettferdighet, skaper de største skiller mellom menneskene, de fleste krigene, de farligste holdningene. Voltaires tanker har fremdeles full gyldighet.

Vers et prose, si la manière varie, on retrouve toujours la verve et l'esprit de l'écrivain philosophe. Jeannot et Colin sont deux amis auvergnats. Les parents du premier font fortune et voici Jeannot promu "marquis de la jeannotière". Le Scythe Babouc, quant à lui, est chargé par le génie, Ituriel d'une mission d'observation dans Persépolis, ville qui ressemble à s'y méprendre à... Paris ! Les habitants sont accusés de tous les maux. Comment Babouc jugera-t-il leur vanité, leur médisance et leur fourberie ? Dans ces deux contes philosophiques, Voltaire déploie toute son ironie pour dénoncer les travers de son époque.

Si Micromégas et La Princesse de Babylone sont deux récits de voyages, ils ne se ressemblent pourtant pas : le premier met en scène un voyage interplanétaire et des conversations scientifiques ; le second est une parodie de conte de fées qui nous permet, au gré des étapes des héros, de comparer divers systèmes politiques. Mais les deux textes utilisent l'efficacité de l'ironie la plus talentueuse pour nous donner une leçon de tolérance. La forme narrative de ces deux contes et la plume alerte de l'écrivain nous entraînent en souriant dans des problèmes aussi graves que les guerres ou le fanatisme. Micromégas est un récit de voyage : le héros quitte Sirius pour se former l'esprit et le cœur, se rend sur Saturne, puis sur la terre. Il voit ainsi avec des yeux neufs le monde où règnent «les préjugés». C'est donc un itinéraire philosophique : le thème principal en est la relativité des connaissances humaines, réparti en courts chapitres, aventures et leçons. La cocasserie y règne partout. Le héros se promène à la manière de Gulliver dans un espace rassurant de planète en planète, pour découvrir qu'il est parfaitement à sa place dans «la grande chaîne des êtres». L'odyssée de l'espace nous ramène à notre fauteuil, et au secret du livre de la destinée, dont toutes les pages sont blanches. L'Ingénu, lui aussi, construit un voyage, porte un regard ironique sur la société française. Cette fois, c'est une comédie sociale qui se joue, en tableaux rapides et caricaturaux, un des meilleurs contes de Voltaire.

Sans faire partie du répertoire fictif le plus étudié de Voltaire, L'Ingénu en est pourtant un des chefs-d'œuvre les plus aboutis. Empruntant aux techniques du conte par la verve et la brièveté de son écriture, il est un condensé de l'art romanesque du XVIIIe siècle. Œuvre de maturité, L'Ingénu mobilise les grands thèmes voltairiens, donnant à la raison et à la justice des visages aussi inattendus que ceux d'un jeune Huron et d'une jolie Bretonne, victimes de l'arbitraire du pouvoir. Le rythme prestissimo de ce récit, où la fiction masque l'humeur pamphlétaire, ne peut que gagner le lecteur à la cause de la tolérance, seule réponse à l'antagonisme obsédant du bien et du mal.
