Chaucer's "Boece" Englisht From Boethius's "De Consolatione Philosophiae."

Maggiori informazioni sul libro

The work has been a familiar companion to scholars from the Middle Ages through the sixteenth century, influencing many during its time. It has been translated into every European language, with nearly a dozen English versions, including notable translations by King Alfred and others in the eighteenth century. The enduring appeal of this significant work justifies a new translation. Boethius's masterpiece, alternating prose and verse like a Greek dialogue, is unique in literature and resonates with the poignant context of its creation. For those who can read the original, the experience is rewarding, yet a fresh English translation is warranted after nearly a century. Some editions feature a bust claimed to depict Boethius, but its authenticity is questionable. Instead, the frontispiece includes a plaster cast from the Ashmolean Museum, representing his father, Narius Manlius Boethius. This rare portrait provides insight into the consular attire and the artistic decline of the era. The consul is depicted in an embroidered cloak, holding a staff with a Roman eagle and a napkin for starting circus races, with symbols of victory at his feet. Thanks are extended to the Ashmolean Museum and Mr. T.W. Jackson for their assistance in using this cast.
