Maggiori informazioni sul libro

The first vampire story in English prose, this tale significantly shaped the modern image of the vampire as an aristocratic seducer. Aubrey, a young Englishman, befriends the enigmatic Lord Ruthven, who has infiltrated London society. Their journey takes them to Rome, where Aubrey parts ways with Ruthven after he seduces a mutual acquaintance's daughter. In Greece, Aubrey meets Ianthe, who shares local vampire legends. Shortly after, Ianthe is killed by a vampire, but Aubrey remains unaware of Ruthven's connection to the tragedy. They continue their travels until Ruthven is mortally wounded by bandits. Before dying, he forces Aubrey to swear an oath not to reveal his death for a year and a day. Upon returning to London, Aubrey is shocked to find Ruthven alive, who reminds him of his oath. Ruthven then sets his sights on Aubrey's sister, leading to Aubrey's emotional turmoil. As the engagement approaches, Aubrey writes a warning letter to his sister about Ruthven, but it arrives too late. On their wedding night, she is found dead, drained of blood, and Ruthven has mysteriously disappeared. This gothic horror story explores themes of seduction, betrayal, and the consequences of secrecy.
